Blog Schedules: Do You Even Notice?

— November 04, 2011 (12 comments)
You may have noticed that Susan's guest post went up on Tuesday -- normally an off-day for Author's Echo -- but also that there was no post on Wednesday. Or maybe you didn't notice! That's what this poll is about.

See, I've seen conflicting advice on the subject of blog schedules. Most professional bloggers say you need a schedule so your audience knows what to expect. I get that. That's one reason I blog M/W/F (usually).

But other advice says don't worry about it. E-mail subscriptions and feed services like Google Reader make blog schedules superfluous. I get that too, considering I don't actually know what anyone's schedule is. I just read whatever's in Google Reader whenever it's there.

So what about you?

  1. I never notice the days that bloggers publish.

I do notice content quality though and regularly unsubscribe if I find myself skimming/skipping posts over time.

  2. I've just changed my own schedule, because I'm at the point where I have to, but as a reader, I don't pay any attention to someone else's schedule. I use reader or the dashboard for that.

  3. I click when you link on Twitter. Dude, I don't even know what today is.

  4. I don't think people notice my schedule. I also blog M/W/F. The schedule keeps me regular (don't I sound like an advert?) and helps me deal with blogging in specific time limits. Before I started the schedule, I was all over the place, forgetting to blog, coming back to comments really late, missing other people's posts. There's less of that now, because of the schedule.

  5. I'm a twitter clicker, too. If I see something that catches my eye there, I'll read. If not, then so be it. I think schedules used to be more important, back before everyone was using feeds, twitter, and the like. It didn't used to be as easy to see when someone updated, but now it is.

  6. The people I regularly check every post, I know their schedule. For people that I skim to see which posts I want to read, I see what they've posted most recently and read that (or skip). If someone goes a long time without posting, they tend to drop off my radar. But I'm a twitter clicker too, so if you write something rocking...I'll notice that, no matter what. :)

  7. I don't usually pay attention but sometimes if I go to their blog enough I figure it out. I have two toddlers and regardless of the bloggers schedule I get to blogs when I get to them.

  8. I don't follow anyone's schedule enough to even know it - maybe I should. I don't schedule my blog either. I just try to post at least once a week. But I do notice when a blog hasn't posted for a week or two. I do like having the blogs I enjoy posting as frequently as possible but it doesn't matter the day.

  9. To be honest, the only 3 blogs I check regularly on the same days are yours, Alex Cavanaugh's, & Natalie Whipple's. You three are the only ones whose schedule I even care about or remember.

  10. I only notice with you because you've mentioned it specifically before, and now that I know the schedule, I look forward to MWF postings from you. However, in general, I do think it is unnecessary since I read through Google reader. :) And I did notice the change up in scheduling. :)

  11. Like the others above, I honestly do not pay attention to a blogger's schedule. For myself though, I try to post every weekend.

  12. You should have one to keep yourself on schedule but as a reader I don't care.
