Boy Books on Ink Spells

From Blue Like Jazz, by Donald Miller:
I understand you can learn a great deal about girldom by reading Pride and Prejudice, and I own a copy, but I have never read it. I tried. It was given to me by a girl with a little note inside that read: What is in this book is the heart of a woman.

I am sure the heart of a woman is pure and lovely, but the first chapter of said heart is hopelessly boring. Nobody dies at all.

I talk about boy books over at Susan Quinn's place. Check it out.

  1. The rest of that Blue Like Jazz quote is pretty good too: "I keep the book on my shelf because girls come into my room, sit on my couch, and eye the books on the adjacent shelf. You have a copy of Pride and Prejudice, they exclaim in a gentle sigh and smile. Yes, I say. Yes, I do."

  2. And, of course, because something is boring a boy is exempt from reading it:P

Nah, kidding. I, uh, haven't read the great P&P. Does that mean I'm not a girl?

  3. Boring is relative. Boys just like explosions :-)

  4. I haven't read P&P either-- because it appears to be painfully dull. I like the rest of that quote though. That's a smart man, right there. You get points for having the copy, no one says you actually have to have read it. :)

I do the same thing--keep important books around-- but not for the sake of winning over women, of course. Just to look smart, that's all.

  5. What if you're a girl that likes explosions AND feelings? :)

Burn Notice AND Pride and Prejudice?

    Just wierd. I know.

Also: I'm thinking of running a contest next week, and I'm probably going to steal some ideas from your contest. Just to let you know. :)

  6. LT: I have never done that. Not on purpose anyway; I always meant to read the books ;-)

Susan (and Natalie): I think that makes you awesome, like how my wife quotes Star Wars to me.

    Also, steal away.

  7. I love P&P, but I'm also fond of explosions.

  8. And I gave you an award, if you want it. There are flowers on it, so I'll understand if you don't. ;o)

  9. I love all awards, Myrna. I just don't put them on my blog (usually). Thank you so much!

  10. Don't people know they turned P&P into a movie... the best way to read a chick book ever. Good or bad it's over in two hours and you can get basic book references in the future and act like you actually read it.

  11. Ah, but you don't get Jane Austen's sly digs. Without her narrative, Austen's stories are reduced to mere romance.
